The biggest victory of the BJP in the local body elections this time has been the party fielding 1,226 candidates for the municipal council and nagar panchayat elections and 367 for the municipal corporation elections. There were a total of 1,977 seats.

This is important in the context that the party had not contested on majority of the seats in the 2024 local body elections. Farmers didn’t allow them to campaign.

The party has won only 172 seats. However, the party leadership is happy with the leaders succeeding in reaching out to the voters. Party movement was visible on the streets. The party won 16 out of 21 seats in Nayagaon municipal council and seven out of 17 seats in Mukerian. The party also performed impressively in Abohar and Fazilka.

In 2021, the party faced protests across several parts of the state. The BJP failed to convince candidates to come out and contest. Even the old-time leaders preferred silence. This time, however, not a single protest was witnessed anywhere in the state.

Speaking about the results, a senior BJP leader said, “History has repeatedly shown that municipal elections are won by the party in power.”

Newly appointed state party president Kewal Singh Dhillon was busy meeting a cross-section of party workers throughout the day today and getting feedback on the election results. He met certain district presidents and party leaders from Barnala at his residence. He will be taking charge officially next week, party sources said.

State president Dhillon visited Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and then went to the Chandigarh BJP headquarters to meet national vice-president Saudan Singh. He also called up especially for a meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in the evening. Party sources said he would be touring the state tomorrow and meeting district presidents at different places.
