Muslim diners can still enjoy meals at the popular food and beverage chain Bungkus Kaw Kaw, despite the establishment not holding a current halal certification from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM). This clarification comes amidst growing concerns and queries from patrons about the halal status of the chain's offerings.

Hanif Jamaluddin, the deputy chief of PAS Youth, took to social media to address these concerns. In his Facebook post, he assured that dining at Bungkus Kaw Kaw is not considered "haram" (forbidden) as long as there are no explicit haram elements present in the food. However, he advised Muslims to seek out halal-certified options whenever possible, particularly from establishments that might be run by non-Muslims.

JAKIM’s Halal Management Division has confirmed that Bungkus Kaw Kaw, along with several other popular chains including Johnny’s Restaurant, Black Canyon, Dolly Dim Sum, Ayam Penyet Best, and Mr Dakgalbi, does not currently possess a valid Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) under the F&B premises scheme. This has prompted ongoing questions from the Muslim community about the halal status of these establishments.

In response to these inquiries, Bungkus Kaw Kaw, which has been operational since 2018, has admitted that it has not yet applied for JAKIM halal certification. The company has emphasized, however, that all ingredients used in their dishes are sourced from suppliers who provide certified halal products.

The company further explained that it plans to focus on securing halal certification for its sister brand, Ah Cheng Laksa, this year. The certification process for Bungkus Kaw Kaw is scheduled to begin in 2024. The brand noted that obtaining halal certification involves a meticulous, step-by-step preparation process to ensure compliance with halal standards.

While Bungkus Kaw Kaw’s current lack of halal certification might raise concerns for some Muslim customers, the chain’s commitment to using certified halal ingredients provides some reassurance. Nonetheless, Hanif’s advice underscores the importance of verifying halal status and opting for certified establishments to ensure adherence to dietary laws.
