Former Malaysian Ambassador to the US, Nazri Aziz, has returned to Kuala Lumpur and is now refocusing on local politics ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). Expressing strong support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Nazri argued that Malaysia lacks a viable successor, even within his own party, UMNO.
“I am deeply concerned about the country’s future because, without PMX, who else is capable of leading Malaysia? Our political system does not encourage the rise of intellectual leaders who avoid playing on racial or religious sentiments,” he stated.
He further argued that Malaysia’s political structure has made it difficult for capable and forward-thinking leaders to emerge. According to Nazri, there is currently no one who matches Anwar’s ability to govern effectively without resorting to divisive tactics. “Tell me, who else? It would be disastrous if Anwar is not the prime minister for another five years after 2026,” he added.
It is pertinent that there should be a balance between fresh blood and experience to run the country smoothly and make advancement in the ever changing political environment internally and globally.
Nazri’s endorsement of Anwar also raises questions about the broader political landscape and the readiness of potential successors. While some believe there are many capable leaders under the age of 70 who could step up, others argue that Malaysia has struggled to produce leaders who prioritize national development over personal or political interests.
The discussion surrounding Anwar’s leadership highlights a deeper concern among Malaysians—whether the country’s political structure is fostering strong and capable leaders. Some believe that honesty and sincerity in governance should take precedence over prolonged rule.
As Malaysia approaches GE16, the debate over leadership and political stability is set to intensify. Whether Anwar continues his tenure or a new leader emerges, the nation’s political future remains uncertain. Nazri’s strong support for Anwar signals confidence in his leadership, but the ultimate decision lies with the people.
