LAHAD DATU: A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a newborn baby left outside a house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali, on July 18.

District police chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the woman was detained on Sunday at the district police headquarters and admitted to giving birth at her home before placing the baby outside.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment, which carries a sentence of up to seven years' jail, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The baby, who was found alive at 3.06am and taken to Lahad Datu Hospital for care, was pronounced dead at 7.02pm the same day due to premature birth and low birth weight.
