A woman was in critical condition following a suspected shark attack at a popular Sydney beach on Saturday morning.

New South Wales Police said they received reports of a shark attack at around 11:15 am (0115 GMT).

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was pulled from the water at Coogee beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs by members of the public, police said.

Police said the woman, who suffered serious arm and leg injuries, had been airlifted to hospital.

Coogee and the nearby beaches of Clovelly and Bronte have been closed.

According to local reports, the woman was swimming and was near the shore when the incident took place.

Coogee is a popular beach with swimmers year-round.
