KOTA MARUDU: A woman, Elena Basir, was found dead while her 8-year-old daughter, Angelina Kardin, remains missing after their four-wheel-drive vehicle with 10 plantation workers was swept away by strong currents while crossing Sungai Boborut, Kampung Bombong, on Wednesday night.
District Police Chief Simiun Lomudin said heavy rain made the river dangerous, but the driver still attempted to cross. The vehicle stalled midstream before being dragged away. All passengers tried to escape, but Elena and Angelina were swept off by the currents.
A search and rescue operation involving police, firefighters, APM, and villagers is ongoing.
