Woman detained after approaching Sultan Nazrin on stage during Perak National Day ceremony

THE National Day celebrations, held in Ipoh, were momentarily disrupted on Sunday morning when a woman climbed onto the main stage at approximately 8.20 a.m., as the state anthem was being played, and made her way towards Perak Ruler His Majesty Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who was standing nearby.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin confirmed that the woman, aged 41, gained access via the side of the stage but was promptly restrained by security personnel. “The woman was successfully detained at the scene and taken to the police station for further investigation,” he stated.

A review of her background revealed a history of drug-related offences and psychiatric treatment, with the suspect currently under medical supervision. “However, the urine screening test conducted on her was negative,” Datuk Noor Hisam added.

The police are investigating the matter under Section 325/511 of the Penal Code for attempted grievous bodily harm.

Noor Hisam issued a stern warning to the public to respect official national events and refrain from actions that could disturb public order or threaten the safety of leaders and dignitaries.

The incident, lasting around 40 seconds, left attendees shocked and bewildered. The woman, dressed in a black shirt and trousers, initially stood at the back of the main stage before suddenly running towards the Sultan and attempting to embrace him from behind.

Some members of the audience initially mistook the event for a staged performance, but quickly realised it was a genuine security breach. - August 31, 2025
