Woman dies, seven hurt in Keningau mishap

KENINGAU: A woman was killed and seven others were injured when the Toyota Hilux they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a ravine at Chanang Hill, Jalan Bingkor, Tuesday.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations centre received an emergency call at 9.54am, prompting the dispatch of a nine-member team from the Keningau Fire and Rescue Station.

The rescue team, led by Selverinus Sixtus Geoffrey, arrived at the scene 12km away at 10.05am.

Initial reports indicated that the four-wheel-drive vehicle was descending a hill when the driver is believed to have lost control, causing it  to veer off the road and into the ravine.

A spokesperson for the department said one woman was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Her remains have been handed over to the police for further action.

Firefighters extricated another woman who was trapped inside the wreckage. The remaining six victims had managed to crawl out of the vehicle on their own before the rescue team’s arrival.

The injured included two men in their 50s suffering from chest pains, a woman in her 40s with minor injuries, a 23-year-old woman with a fractured arm and a 10-year-old boy with shoulder injuries. Two other victims were also reported injured, though their personal details were not immediately available.

The operation, which involved cooperation from the police and the Ministry of Health, was brought under control at 11.30am.
