Kota Kinabalu: A 60-year-old woman was fined RM2,000 or jailed two months by the Magistrate’s Court here for voluntarily causing hurt to her son-in-law.
Foo Ming Chu pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to causing hurt to Marcel Chiu En Sui, 37, at about 7pm on June 16 this year at a house in Taman Prestige Residences, Manggatal.
The court heard that the complainant had lodged a police report alleging that he had been assaulted by his mother-in-law.
On the day of the incident, the complainant was called by his wife to her family’s house in Manggatal to discuss their marital problems.
During the discussion, Foo intervened and demanded RM5,000 for their divorce should they quarrel again.
Their four-year-old son then approached and hugged the complainant, angering Foo and triggering an argument between her and the complainant.
During the incident, Foo repeatedly hit the complainant on his arms, body, legs and stomach. She also pushed him against a cabinet and slapped him in the face.
Following the incident, the complainant experienced pain throughout his body and suffered an asthma attack.
The offence, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
Prosecuting Officer Dzulfamie Amrin appeared for the prosecution, while Foo was represented by counsel.
Foo had previously appeared in court in connection with the same charge and pleaded not guilty.
The court subsequently fixed the case for pre-trial case management and released her on RM1,300 bail with two local sureties.
