A woman in France was fined €110 (around RM541) after her cat’s loud meowing disturbed passengers during a train ride. The incident sparked mixed reactions online—some supported the penalty, while others felt it was overly harsh.

According to China Press, a woman named Camille was traveling from Brittany to Paris on a three-hour train journey with her boyfriend, Pierre, and their cat, Monet.

During the ride, Monet’s meowing reportedly became disruptive, prompting complaints from other passengers. The train operator, SNCF, deemed the noise a “public disturbance.”

Camille was allegedly asked to move to a nearly empty carriage with her cat, but she refused. As a result, SNCF issued the €110 fine, stating that the problem wasn’t the meowing itself, but the disruption it caused to others.

Camille, however, contested the fine, arguing that her cat had a valid €7 (RM34) ticket and was kept inside a carrier, so no rules were broken.

The incident drew a range of reactions online. Some praised SNCF for prioritising passenger comfort and maintaining quiet on board.

Others criticised the move as excessive, describing SNCF staff as inflexible and overly strict.

In a statement, SNCF maintained that the fine could have been avoided if Camille had simply agreed to switch carriages, claiming it would have been a practical solution that respected everyone’s comfort, including her pet’s.
