
A 37-YEAR-OLD woman is in critical condition and has been placed in an induced coma after she was doused with petrol and set alight by her boyfriend in a horrific attempted murder near the Simpang Renggam toll plaza near Kluang, Johor on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 5.46am, also left the 44-year-old male suspect with serious burns. He too has been sedated at Hospital Enche' Besar Hajjah Kalsom due to the extent of his injuries.
Kluang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, said police received an emergency call reporting a car fire near the toll plaza, shortly followed by a report from a bus driver alleging an attempted murder using petrol.
"According to initial investigations, the suspect forcibly pulled the woman off a bus before dousing her with petrol and setting both of them alight using a lighter," said Bahrin.
"As a result, both the victim and the suspect sustained extensive burns."
A third man, believed to be in his 30s, suffered burns to his hands and legs while attempting to assist the woman during the attack.
All three individuals were rushed to hospital at around 6am. Due to the severity of their injuries, both the woman and the suspect remain under sedation.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
