Woman pleads not guilty to cheating customer over luxury handbag

A WOMAN was charged in the Johor Bahru Magistrate's Court today for cheating a buyer into buying a non-existent luxury handbag amounting to over RM41,000.

The accused, Christina Tseu Cheau Wei, 36, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to her by an interpreter before Magistrate A Shaarmini.

According to the charge, the woman is accused of deceiving a 53-year-old woman into making a transaction of RM41,288 into her bank account for the purchase of a Hermes Mini Lindy handbag.

The accused was charged with committing the act at about 11.31 am at a condominium in Jalan Sri Laguna 1, Taman Laguna on August 26, 2025.

She was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine or both, if convicted.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Fatihah Mohd Nizam offered bail of RM10,000, but defence lawyer Jason Tan Ka Yan requested that the amount be reduced.

"The accused, who has two children aged 12 and 17, has no regular income and is taking care of her mother, who has blood cancer," he said.

The court allowed the accused to be bailed at RM4,000 with a local surety and set June 9 as the date for mention of the case.

Earlier, the 56-year-old victim lodged a police report on May 2 after claiming not to have received the luxury designer bag from the accused despite having made a payment. – May 7, 2026
