KUALA LUMPUR – A 31-year-old woman has been charged at the Sepang Sessions Court for uploading and sharing false content bearing the ‘BuletinTV3’ name and logo.

The post, which appeared on the social media platform Threads on 31 March 2026, falsely reported significant increases in petrol and diesel prices that contradicted official rates effective April 1, 2026.

The accused, Siti Nor Sayikilla Mohd Azhar, faces charges under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for knowingly using an application service, in this case her Threads account, to create and transmit false communications.

Siti pleaded not guilty and requested a trial. The court set bail at RM4,000 and scheduled the next hearing for May 4, 2026.

If convicted, she could face penalties under Section 233(2) of Act 588, which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) emphasised its firm stance against the misuse of social media and digital platforms to mislead the public.

“Strict action will be taken against any individual found violating existing laws,” the commission said in a statement.

The public is urged to exercise responsibility when using social media and digital communication tools and to avoid posting or disseminating content that could disrupt social harmony and public order. - April 30, 2026
