KUALA LUMPUR – Subang MP Wong Chen has indicated he will join Parti Bersama Malaysia (PBM) in the future, signalling a possible departure from PKR.

“If I decide to stand in the next general election, it will be as a Bersama candidate,” Wong told Scoop in a brief text message.

The move raises the prospect of him resigning his parliamentary seat, following the recent departures of former PKR leaders Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who stepped down as Pandan MP and Setiawangsa MP respectively.

Wong Chen, who was present during Rafizi and Nik Nazmi's announcement today, has been with PKR since 2009, leading the party’s economics and public policy division.

He has earned a reputation as one of the party’s key policy thinkers, collaborating closely with Rafizi Ramli on alternative budgets and economic reforms, and has served as an MP since 2013.

Earlier, both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi announced their resignations from PKR, effective May 18, coinciding with their takeover of PBM.

PKR confirmed the resignations, with the party’s secretary-general, Senator Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, saying: “Keadilan accepts this decision, and in accordance with Clause 9(1)(c) of the Keadilan Constitution, their membership is automatically terminated upon their declaration of leaving the party.”

She added that their departure aligns with Article 49A(1)(a)(ii) of the Federal Constitution, which requires a Member of Parliament to vacate their seat if they leave the party under which they were elected.

“As Secretary-General, I will refer both cases involving these MPs to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat regarding their status as Members of Parliament under the Federal Constitution,” Dr Fuziah said.

PKR also plans to review the membership status of other MPs who attended the political briefing with Rafizi and Nik Nazmi.

This leaves questions remaining on the political fate of the other MPs who were said to have attended the event.

Rafizi confirmed he would formally inform the Dewan Rakyat Speaker of his decision to resign and vacate the Pandan parliamentary seat, while Nik Nazmi said he would submit his resignation to the party’s secretary-general.

The resignations have sparked speculation over potential by-elections in Pandan and Setiawangsa. Rafizi noted that the decision to call a by-election rests with the Speaker, especially if the vacancies affect the government’s parliamentary majority. - May 17, 2026
