In a strategic move to reassure Chinese tourists about their safety in Thailand, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has emphasized her Chinese heritage, declaring she has "Chinese blood in her" during a visit to Beijing.

Her remarks come amid heightened security concerns among Chinese travelers following a recent kidnapping case involving a Chinese actor, Wang Xing, who was abducted in Thailand and later rescued from a scam center in Myanmar.

As Thailand works to maintain its position as a top travel destination for Chinese visitors, Paetongtarn is actively addressing their fears while strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with China.

Ancestry as a Diplomatic Asset

Paetongtarn, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, traces her family roots back to Guangdong in southern China. During her first official visit to Beijing since taking office in August 2024, she used this connection to emphasize Thailand’s historical ties with China. She told state-run China Daily about the Thai people always come to China and feel at home, so I hope that Chinese people can come to Thailand and feel at home as well.

Beyond her personal outreach, Thailand is taking concrete steps to curb transnational crimes, especially those originating from scam centers operating in Myanmar. A day before Paetongtarn’s arrival in China, her government announced it would cut electricity to key border areas suspected of harboring criminal syndicates targeting foreign nationals.

China’s Support for Thailand’s Crackdown

Beijing has taken note of Thailand’s efforts. Chinese President Xi Jinping commended the decision to sever power and water supplies to these illegal operations. Given China’s own struggles with scam networks that have victimized its citizens, Thailand’s move is seen as a show of commitment to Chinese security concerns. "You know, the prime minister of Thailand has Chinese blood in her," Paetongtarn reiterated, focusing her personal stake in ensuring the safety of Chinese tourists.

Former Prime Minister Thaksin, who remains an influential figure in Thai politics, also weighed in on the importance of Thailand’s cooperation with China in fighting cybercrime. He noted that cutting power and internet to five Myanmar border locations which are key hubs for scam syndicates, was a necessary step but emphasized the need for further collaboration with Cambodia, as some of these groups may relocate there.

Boosting Economic and Tourism Ties

Paetongtarn’s visit also focused on expanding cooperation with China in key sectors, including infrastructure, electric vehicles, and the digital economy. However, reassuring Chinese travelers remains a top priority, as they constitute the largest group of foreign visitors to Thailand.

Chinese tourism is crucial for Thailand's economy and the Thai government cannot afford a decline in arrivals due to safety concerns. By intertwining diplomacy with personal heritage, Paetongtarn is crafting a message of trust and familiarity, hoping to turn Thailand into a "second home" for Chinese visitors.

As the Shinawatra family continues to wield influence in Thailand’s political and economic landscape, Paetongtarn’s approach reflects a broader strategy: maintaining strong ties with both China and the United States while positioning Thailand as a regional leader in security and tourism.
