KUALA LUMPUR — The government’s work-from-home (WFH) policy for the public sector has recorded fuel savings of 334,000 litres of RON95 petrol, equivalent to about RM678,000, just two weeks after its implementation.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was raised by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar during the Cabinet meeting, with 155,000 civil servants having registered under the programme since it began on April 15.

He said the early figures reflected the effectiveness of the policy in reducing daily commuting, while helping to lower national fuel consumption and operating costs.

“Since April 15 until yesterday, we estimate savings of 334,000 litres of fuel, equivalent to approximately RM678,000,” he said during the weekly post-Cabinet press conference here on Wednesday.

Fahmi said Shamsul had also been reminded to obtain information from the private sector regarding the implementation of work-from-home arrangements to assess the overall national savings achieved.

“Tan Sri KSN has also been reminded to make efforts to obtain information from the private sector regarding the implementation of working from home in that sector so that we can see the overall savings achieved,” he said.

The policy was previously introduced as part of the government’s response to the global energy crisis triggered by the West Asian conflict, which has caused wider economic repercussions worldwide.

The WFH arrangement involves ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked companies.

Fahmi added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also reminded government agencies to prioritise measures aimed at extending fuel supplies.

This includes conducting more meetings online and reducing the number of face-to-face meetings. - April 22, 2026
