WORK stress or bullying is believed to be among the causes of the death of a trainee doctor who was found in the Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital (HSIP) dormitory last Friday.

A spokesman for the Contract Doctors' Strike (HDK) said the incident was very sad and that they expressed their condolences to the victim's family and friends.

"Any possibility could be the cause of the incident, and we would like to urge the establishment of an independent commission to investigate this incident holistically and in detail.

"The bullying or work stress factor may be one of the causes, but it is too early to draw conclusions before the investigation is carried out," he told Sinar Harian on Monday.

Meanwhile, he also admitted that the challenges and pressures faced by trainee doctors at government hospitals at this time are quite worrying.

According to him, if the issue is not curbed, it is feared that more unwanted incidents may occur.

“In this regard, every hospital needs to have a unit consisting of counsellors and other health workers who can be a support group for those who are stressed.

“At the same time, society also needs to play a role by not considering those who are experiencing stress as weak and not being prejudiced against them.

“Trainee doctors who are facing issues such as bullying or stress can also seek help through several channels, including HelpDoc by the Malaysian Medical Association, the SISPAA system under the Ministry of Health Malaysia or contacting Hartal Doktor Kontrak to get advice and assistance,” he said.

The media previously reported that the 29-year-old victim was found dead in the bathroom, and investigations at the scene found that no criminal elements had occurred.

The cause of death is believed to be pressure on the neck, and the case is being investigated as a sudden death report. – March 9, 2026
