A worker’s successful PERKESO claim after a commute accident highlights gaps in coverage, prompting calls for the new 24-Hour Protection Bill
GEORGE TOWN: A successful appeal for a Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) claim by an injured worker has underscored the need to expand social protection coverage.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said the case involved a 53-year-old storekeeper, Ah Aik, who suffered serious injuries including a broken leg in a road accident.
The claim was initially rejected due to incomplete documentation.
Sim said the victim lost his job after the accident and relied on his wife’s factory income while supporting their school-going children.
“After the appeal was submitted and processed in accordance with the required procedures and legal provisions, PERKESO approved the claim,” he stated.
Sim personally handed over a cheque for RM9,100 to Ah Aik, with other benefits to be managed by PERKESO.
The case was recognised as an occupational hazard because the accident occurred during his commute home from work.
Sim highlighted a gap where workers stopping for personal errands are not covered if an accident occurs during those activities.
He said the recently passed 24-Hour Protection Bill seeks to provide more comprehensive protection reflecting modern workers’ realities.
The bill is scheduled for presentation in the Dewan Negara on December 17, with hopes for its prompt approval and implementation. – Bernama
