MANILA, Philippines — Labor groups and human rights organizations staged their annual Labor Day protest in Manila on Friday, calling on the government to raise the minimum wage to P1,200 and to scrap the value-added tax (VAT) and excise tax on fuel amid the ongoing oil crisis.
The groups, led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and Kilusang Mayo Uno, converged along España boulevard to unite for the mass action.
During the protest, Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Sarah Elago told The Manila Times that sustaining mass action was important, noting that many human rights gains were achieved through collective protests.
