A working mother has sparked discussion online after sharing that her husband wanted them to start splitting household expenses 50/50 because she rarely cooks for him.
According to the woman, she works while raising two children and said she handles the children on her own most of the time as her husband frequently travels overseas for work.
She said that while her husband noticed that she rarely cooks for him, he appeared to overlook the other responsibilities she takes care of when he is away.
“I settle the kids by myself most of the time, tidy up the house and do the laundry when he isn’t around,” she wrote.
She added that whenever her husband returned home, the house was always kept clean and was never left in a mess.
Husband felt it was unfair
In a follow up comment, the woman explained that her husband felt it was unfair that he was financially providing for everything while she was unable to cook for him regularly.
She clarified that it was not because he could no longer afford to support the household.
Rather, she said he felt that since he was paying for everything, it was unfair that she did not cook for him.
This eventually led him to suggest that they start splitting expenses equally.
She told him to change jobs first
The woman, however, said she gave him a condition of her own.
She told her husband that if he wanted them to start going 50/50 financially, he should first quit his current job and look for a regular office hours job that would allow him to be home every day.

Only then, she said, could they properly discuss a 50/50 arrangement.
Her point appeared to be that an equal financial split should also come with a more equal division of responsibilities at home, especially since she currently handles much of the childcare and household work while he is overseas.

She added that she takes care of the children and makes sure the house is always clean without keeping track of who does more.
“I take care of the kids and make sure the house is always clean. I don’t calculate everything like that,” she wrote.
When another user asked how her husband responded to her condition, the woman said he had yet to reply.
The discussion also prompted several users to question whether a 50/50 arrangement should apply only to finances.
One commenter suggested that if a couple wanted to split expenses equally, childcare, cooking and household chores should also be divided equally.
