World’s first battery-powered cruise ship could be built ‘within 5 years’

  • German shipyard Meyer Werft has unveiled "Project Vision," a concept for the world's first 100 per cent battery-powered cruise ship.
  • The proposed vessel, measuring 275 metres and accommodating 1,856 passengers, could be delivered by 2031 if ordered this year.
  • Powered by a battery system from Norway's Corvus Energy, the ship is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 per cent.
  • Its innovative design eliminates the need for a traditional exhaust shaft and funnel, potentially allowing for an entirely new sun deck layout with unobstructed views.
  • This development aligns with broader industry efforts towards sustainability, including the use of LNG, hydrogen, and biofuels in newer cruise ships and ports like Dover achieving net-zero status.
