LAHAD DATU: A World War II-era bomb was safely detonated by the Bomb Disposal Unit (UPB) near Sungai Segama, here, Tuesday, following its discovery by a local fisherman.

District Police Chief, ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail, said the operation was conducted at 11.33am using the low-order method, assisted by electrical systems and special explosives.

The bomb disposal effort involved the Sabah Police Contingent, Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters, and other supporting units.

“The operation went smoothly without any injuries or property damage reported,” he said in a statement.

The Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), weighing over 200kg and measuring about 30cm in length, was discovered on Sunday by a 52-year-old man while fishing along the Sungai Segama riverbank.

Authorities later confirmed it was a relic from the Second World War.
