Former Arsenal attacker Jermaine Pennant has blasted Granit Xhaka and questioned the Arsenal captain's leadership credentials.
Xhaka is at the centre of a storm at the Emirates after reacting angrily to being substituted and subsequently booed by his own club's fans during Sunday's draw with Crystal Palace.
"You can't sugar coat it. It was wrong. You can't defend that," Pennant told talkSPORT.
"Captains don't behave like that. I could never see Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira conduct themselves in that manner.
"A captain leads the team, and he doesn't seem like a leader. The players might respect him but I've played under leaders. Steven Gerrard, if things aren't going well he would lead the team, he'll get on the ball.
"Xhaka in the game, he didn't want the ball, he was hiding."
Pennant called for Emery to select a new captain, suggesting Xhaka does not measure up to players who have donned the armband at the club previously.
"You look at the captains they've had and you put him alongside it, there's a massive difference," Pennant added.
"Vieira was an absolute leader. He used to frighten me in training. He was such a great person as well. To put Xhaka against captains like that."
