WWF aims 50pc protection of Sabah forests

Kota Kinabalu: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia aims to have 50 per cent of the State land protected by maintaining forest reserves for ecosystem.

WWF-Malaysia’s Head of Conservation in Sabah, Dr Robecca Jumin, said through the Sabah Landscapes Programme (SLP), her department placed the target under the first element which is to protect forest, water catchment areas and wildlife.

“We aim to have 50 per cent of the State land protected by maintaining forest reserves in order to provide sufficient ecosystems for water areas, flora and fauna habitats and continue the policy of 30 per cent of Fully Protected Areas (TPA) by 2025.

In addition, Robecca said: “We also want to ensure wildlife remains by strengthening efforts to protect and create corridors between forests to enable wildlife to relocate while increasing resistance to drastic weather changes.”

Read more She explained WWF-Malaysia had also set the second element which is to produce involving cooperation with private sector in order to conserve high value conservation areas with the implementation of sustainable operations.

The third element is restore, which is conservation efforts in collaboration with the community and private sector because they are conscious about forest areas explored previously, among them, Sabah Parks, Malaysia’s largest multi-purpose park, Tun Mustapha Marine Park along with Darvel Bay.

“We have identified the area as one of the vital areas in terms of biodiversity and residents there depend much on it as an important fishing area,” she said after paying a courtesy call on the Head of State, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Wednesday.

Also paying a courtesy visit on Tun Juhar at Istana Seri Kinabalu was Qatar Ambassador to Malaysia, Salah Mohammed Al-Sorour, to exchange views and strengthen bilateral relations in economy, technology and tourism.
