In a major action against illegal mining activities, the Wildlife department has started digging deep trenches on routes leading to the Yamuna river, situated close to Kalesar National Park area of Yamunanagar district.
The move has been initiated to stop the movement of heavy vehicles, allegedly involved in illegal mining and transportation of boulders, from the area of Yamuna river falling under the eco-sensitive zone of the National Park.
According to information, the mining mafia reportedly makes efforts to carry out illegal mining of boulders from the Yamuna river area, falling in the eco-sensitive zone of the National Park by ignoring environmental norms.
Acting on information about such activities, the Wildlife department is blocking access routes by digging deep pits and trenches so that mining vehicles cannot enter the river area.
Sources said that only a few mining sites were functional in the district, therefore the mining mafia stole the boulder from Yamuna river area allegedly to supply it to some of the contractors, who undertook flood protection works of the government.
Umesh Bhati, Deputy Ranger (Wildlife), Kalesar National Park said that deep trenches were being dug on ways leading to Yamuna river through the National Park area.
“Recently, we have dug a deep trench in the Faizpur village area leading towards the Yamuna river to stop the movement of heavy vehicles. This area of the National Park falls under eco-sensitive zone,” said Bhati.
He said that strict vigil was being maintained round the clock in the area adjoining the Yamuna river.
“Complete restrictions have already been imposed on illegal mining activities in eco-sensitive zones of the Yamuna river area. Forest guards and Wildlife staff are continuously patrolling the area to keep a check on illegal mining activities,” added Bhati.
