Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes reveals where he stands with Kevin Costner two years after his exit

Luke Grimes has shed light on his relationship with Kevin Costner, two years after his former Yellowstone co-star’s fraught exit from the Western drama.

Grimes played Kayce Dutton, the son of Costner’s land-owning patriarch John Dutton, throughout Taylor Sheridan’s hit series.

Costner famously left the show in 2024, midway through its fifth and final season, amid reports of a falling out between him and Sheridan.

In a new interview with USA Today, Grimes confirmed he hasn’t spoken to Costner since he left the show.

“I have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,” Grimes said. “Not for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on.”

Grimes has continued his role as Kayce in the Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals.

Asked whether Costner might ever reprise his role for a cameo on Grimes’s show, the actor replied: “I think that would be cool [but] I doubt that would happen, at this point.

“If there was a flashback, I would want it to be with [Kayce’s wife] Monica than John,” he continued. “I think that would be more poignant to the character, but we will see.

“There’s been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her,” he concluded, referring to Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica in Yellowstone.

Grimes weighed in on Costner’s exit at the time, saying the Dances with Wolves star’s absence made the final installment of the Paramount Plus show “the easiest season we’ve filmed.”

“To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone,” Grimes told Esquire in 2024. “Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”

Earlier that year, Grimes said in an interview with The Independent: “Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold. I know, [Costner] got busy with his movies that were like passion projects. At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man; you gotta do what you love.”

Costner said he left Yellowstone due to a mixture of delayed scripts, prolonged production hiatuses, and scheduling clashes with his self-funded Western film project, Horizon: An American Saga.

Costner released the first film in his Western epic in June 2024, shortly after his Yellowstone exit, but the ambitious project bombed at the box office, taking in just $38 million worldwide against its reported $50 million production budget.
