A NEWBORN baby, believed to have been born just hours earlier, was found wrapped in black plastic and a grey towel at Teluk Likas Public Park in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday morning.
The infant was discovered around 6.30 a.m. by a member of the public passing through the area.
Kota Kinabalu Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda, confirmed that authorities received a report regarding the incident.
“Initial information was received via a phone call from a member of the public who notified us about the discovery of the baby in the area. Preliminary investigations suggest the newborn had been born only a few hours prior and was found wrapped in black plastic and a grey towel,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
The baby was found alive, safe, and without any injuries. “Ambulance services were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the infant was transported to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Likas for further medical assessment and care,” Kasim added.
Police noted that there were no witnesses to the incident and that no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras cover the area.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth with intent to abandon a child, and authorities are actively seeking the individual responsible.
“The case has also been referred to the Social Welfare Department for follow-up actions concerning the baby’s welfare.
“Members of the public who may have information are urged to assist the investigation by contacting the nearest police station or Investigating Officer SM Rosmah Pg Hasim at 011-31677612.
Meanwhile, the public is advised not to speculate in ways that could impede the investigation and to respect the privacy of all parties involved,” Kasim said.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment as the newborn receives care and protection under social welfare authorities. - December 21, 2025
