Yorkshire tiger attack victim died from multiple traumatic injuries, inquest hears

William Chapman, who entered a tiger enclosure at a wildlife park on Saturday, died from multiple traumatic injuries, an inquest opening has heard.

The 24-year-old was mauled to death at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster on Saturday.

An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of his death, the hearing at Doncaster Coroner's Court on Thursday was told.

The inquest heard that Mr Chapman had a history of mental illness and a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

He had experienced previous bouts of psychosis, the hearing was told.

Coroner's officer Caitlin Brookes said that his family had expressed “a number of concerns” in relation to his contact with mental health services.

William Chapman had a diagnosis of schizophrenia

Mr Chapman had been under adult mental health services in Doncaster but was “highly functioning and independent with no care requirements”, the inquest heard.

Ms Brookes said the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation trust had launched an investigation following Mr Chapman's death.

The hearing heard that Mr Chapman went to Yorkshire Wildlife Park on 10 October.

Around 1.30pm, he climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure, the inquest was told.

Ms Brookes said: “He was approached by the tiger and the ensuing physical contact between the tiger and Mr Chapman led to him sustaining multiple traumatic injuries which rapidly led to his death.”

Flowers left outside the wildlife park after the attack

Park staff secured the tiger after the incident.

Paramedics attended and confirmed Mr Chapman's death at the scene.

The inquest heard Mr Chapman was a self-employed online trader who was living in Doncaster at the time of his death.

His full name was William Harry Bruce Chapman, and he was born in 2002 in Chichester, the hearing was told.

Mr Chapman's stepfather travelled to the mortuary to identify him on 13 October, the inquest heard.

Ms Mundy said Mr Chapman's family “were finding things incredibly difficult” and had decided not to attend the hearing, but would be updated afterwards by her staff.

Ms Mundy said her office was awaiting a more substantial report as to the extent of Mr Chapman's injuries.

City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing the park, is carrying out a health and safety investigation, the hearing was told.

The council said it would share the outcome of that investigation with the coroner.

A full inquest into Mr Chapman's death will be held on 18 March 2027.

In a previous statement on social media, the wildlife park said “many, many people” had contacted them about Altai, the Amur tiger involved in the incident.

The park confirmed he is “safe and well” and will not be euthanised.
