You do not have to be a brilliant political analyst to conclude that Tun Mahathir is about to form a united Malay front to challenge PH in next state elections. All you need to do is read between the lines. Watch Tun M's every move.
Recently, Tun Mahathir gave two signals that he is planning to launch a strategy towards realising the dream of a united Malay front to defeat PH in the coming state elections.
Tun M is a strategist par excellence. He is known for not taking a step without planning ten more that will follow the first one.
During the first week of Aidilfitri, he made a statement warning Malaysians not to scare voters from supporting the Green Wave.
He says, "Don’t try to scare them with Malay rule by painting them green,” tweeting in Malay, without naming or addressing anyone directly.
Since GE15, PN seems to be gaining momentum amongst the grassroots. One defining moment was when PN won Padang Serai in Kedah which is on the border of Penang. It was overwhelming and it worried DAP that rules the island state and Seberang Perai.
Their party leaders did voice concerns that PN nicknamed the Green Wave, because of large green flags which flooded the fields of Padang Serai then might just trample all over Penang, or at least the mainland constituencies, if not the state as a whole, threatening the DAP controlled government. That announcement (28 April) by Tun was a signal of what was going to follow next.
Two days later (30 April) the media reported he met Annuar Musa head of Mufakat Nasional that sources say was held to discuss Malay-Bumiputera unity.
"Annuar had said he and Mahathir had agreed to promote and boost the concept of Malay unity to ensure the people remain at the heart of the country's administration and political landscape." Now that we have established that Tun Mahathir is planning to promote and boost the concept of Malay unity, what would he be thinking of next?
Annuar Musa has the set up under Mufakat Nasional to undertake the task of promoting the concept of Malay unity. That gives us an indication of what he would try next.
Tun Mahathir had tried this earlier with Malay People's Proclamation but was repeatedly frustrated by the government that had allegedly kept "blocking" him by locking him out of designated venues for the all-Malay event.
However, a similar event conducted under Mufakat Nasional hopefully will not be blocked by the government. After all, it is a registered NGO with branches all over the country headed by Annuar Musa and might be viewed more favourably by the authorities.
Tun Mahathir may then piggyback on Annuar and Mufakat Nasional to widen support for Malay Proclamation.
We believe Tun Mahathir then will try to use Mufakat Nasional as his platform to campaign for unity among Malays to assist PN in challenging PH in the forthcoming state elections.
To this end, Tun Mahathir has been able to obtain an endorsement from none other than Hadi Awang himself.
According to The Star, several top PAS leaders have met former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to support his "Malay Proclamation", aimed at uniting the Malays.
"Several top PAS leaders led by Hadi signed the Malay People's Proclamation in front of Mahathir," Dr Mahathir's aide Abu Bakar Yahya said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (May 3). - Focus Malaysia
So, not only has Tun Mahathir announced that the Green Wave is coming but he has also warned people who are against the movement not to discredit Malay-led parties by labelling them as green and scary.
We are sure Tun Mahathir may not stop just at the state level. In fact, with PN winning major stakes in forthcoming state elections, there is nothing to stop them from going beyond to federal level.
How that will be played out we shall have to wait for Tun Mahathir to reveal his cards.
That episode I believe will be Tun Mahathir's swan-song. It'll be spectacular.
