WhatsApp has announced a couple of new features to make multitasking on multiple devices much easier, especially if you’re someone who uses the calling feature often.
The messaging platform is now allowing users to make audio and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, both for one-on-one and group calls. This means that you can now do more with the browser version of WhatsApp, so you won’t even need to download the standalone desktop app for it on your computer.
According to WhatsApp, you’ll still get access to features available on your other devices such as screen sharing, reactions and even the dedicated Calls tab with your call history and favourites on your browser, as well as end-to-end call encryption.
On top of that, if you’re already on a call from your phone but wish to move over to your computer—maybe to screen share or work while in the call—you can now transfer active calls from one device to another without needing to hang up, be it from smartphone or tablet to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
And just like what you’d come to expect from Zoom or Google Meet, group calls in WhatsApp now come with a Waiting Room. When you create a WhatsApp call, you can now enable ‘Require approval to join’, so that participants will have to sit in a virtual lobby before being allowed entry.
Other minor updates of note coming to calls include QuickHD, which instantly gives HD video quality at the very start of the call, and noise suppression for better audio in calls by removing background noise.
WhatsApp says that these featrures are already being rolled out gradually and will soon be available to all of their users.
