The extravagant and swanky Young family mansion from Crazy Rich Asians is now open to the public. Here’s what you need to know.
Seems like you don’t need a fortuitous meeting with a handsome and debonair heir to a Southeast Asian family fortune to step into this iconic mansion. The critically-acclaimed film Crazy Rich Asians, which was released in 2018, followed Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, and her relationship with Nick, played by Henry Golding. Unbeknownst to her, Nick comes from an extremely affluent family, as evidenced by his family’s gorgeous mansion.
However, the mansion isn’t a set built for the movie. It’s a real location, and the good news is that it’s now open to the public. Here’s what you need to know about the Crazy Rich Asians mansion, Seri Negara.
Crazy Rich Asians mansion Seri Negara is now open to the public
Seri Negara used to be the official residence and guest house of the British High Commissioner in Malaya. The government gained ownership of the estate in 1987. Afterwards, it was turned into a luxurious boutique hotel, even serving as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s temporary residence when they were in the country. However, in 2015, operations ceased, and Carcosa Seri Negara closed down.
It was in 2018 that the estate was used as the Young family mansion in the filming of Crazy Rich Asians. The house served as the setting where Rachel meets Nick’s family, and also fully realises just how insanely rich his family is. In the film though, the Young mansion is located in Singapore.
After a ten-month conservation project, Seri Negara is now opening its doors to the public. The 112-year-old heritage house has been spruced up and refurbished while still preserving its colonial details. Guests can also view the Seri Negara Gallery, which takes visitors through the history of Malaysia. The estate also houses Semuka Cafe and Serai House, a reservation-only restaurant.
