SANDAKAN: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch Chairman, Ir. Ts. Tan KJ has called upon graduate and young engineers in Sabah to actively pursue professional registration and continuously enhance their competencies in order to meet the growing demands of the engineering profession.
He said the future of the engineering profession depends on the commitment of young engineers to achieve professional excellence, uphold ethical standards, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Tan said this in his speech at an opening of a seminar entitled “Route to Professional Engineer in Malaysia – Outcome-Based PI 2.0” here, recently.

Tan also highlighted that professional registration is not merely a career milestone but also a mark of competency, responsibility, and commitment to lifelong learning.
Hence, he encouraged engineers to embrace the Outcome-Based Professional Interview (PI) 2.0 framework as an opportunity to demonstrate their professional competencies, leadership capabilities, communication skills, and ethical values.
“As engineers, we carry the responsibility of shaping infrastructure, improving communities, and contributing to the nation’s development. Professional registration provides recognition of our competency and strengthens public confidence in the engineering profession,” Tan said.
He further reaffirmed IEM Sabah’s commitment to supporting the professional development of engineers throughout the State, particularly in nurturing the next generation of engineering leaders in Sabah.
The technical session was delivered by Ir. Wah Kheng Haw, Committee Member of IEM Sabah Branch and a member of the IEM Professional Interview Development Sub-Committee, who provided participants with valuable insights into the Outcome-Based Professional Interview (PI) 2.0 framework, competency assessment requirements, Training and Experience (T&E) reports, professional ethics, and interview preparation.
Tan said the programme forms part of IEM Sabah Branch’s continuous effort to increase the number of Professional Engineers in Sabah while strengthening the competency and professionalism of the engineering fraternity.
Under his leadership, he said IEM Sabah continues to actively promote professional development, lifelong learning, and engineering excellence through seminars, technical talks, and capacity-building programmes throughout the State.
The Branch remains committed to empowering engineers, supporting professional advancement, and contributing towards the sustainable development of Sabah and Malaysia.
