A 20-YEAR-OLD factory worker has been remanded for four days by the Magistrate’s Court in Penang to assist investigations into an alleged assault on independent preacher and activist Zamri Vinoth.
The remand order, issued by Magistrate Nik Muhammad Shahrul Aiman Kamalrulzaman, is effective until Wednesday.
The suspect appeared at court at approximately 9:45 a.m., accompanied by police officers and dressed in an orange detention uniform.
Penang Police Chief Azizee Ismail confirmed that authorities had received a report from Zamri concerning the alleged attack, leading to the early morning arrest of the suspect.
“The case is being investigated under Section 506 and Section 427 of the Penal Code. Investigations are ongoing,” he told New Straits Times. Section 506 pertains to criminal intimidation, while Section 427 involves acts of mischief.
The suspect is reported to own a motorcycle that appeared in viral footage of the assault, which occurred around 3 p.m. near Taman Aston Acacia.
The police have also identified several other individuals believed to be involved.
Zamri, known for speaking out on land encroachment issues, said in a Facebook post that a group attempted to attack him, but he managed to escape.
“They brought sticks and stones and tried to attack me. Thankfully, they only threw stones and smashed my car window.
“They only dare to act when in groups. That’s why I say they cannot be allowed. They have begun to challenge us,” he wrote. - March 8, 2026
