In a bizarre turn of events in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, a 12-year-old girl found herself trapped inside a washing machine after an argument with her mother over unfinished homework. The incident occurred on March 30, when the girl, feeling overwhelmed and upset after being scolded, attempted to calm herself down in an unusual way—by climbing into the family’s top-loading washing machine while her mother was distracted.
However, her attempt to “cool off” quickly turned problematic as she became firmly lodged within the appliance, unable to extricate herself. Her mother, discovering the unusual situation and unable to free her daughter, promptly contacted emergency services for assistance.
When firefighters arrived, they found the girl visibly in pain and calling out for help. Due to the limited space and risk of injury, forcibly pulling her out was not an option. Instead, the rescue team opted for a careful disassembly of the washing machine.
The rescuers covered the girl with a blanket to shield her during the operation. They then used a screwdriver to detach the machine’s outer casing, followed by hydraulic tools to safely cut through the structure. Throughout the 16-minute rescue, firefighters kept the girl calm with comforting words and encouragement.
Eventually, the girl was successfully freed without any serious injuries. A firefighter carried her to a bed to rest and recover from the ordeal. It remains unknown whether the incident helped reconcile the mother and daughter.
The story quickly gained traction on Chinese social media platforms, with related videos receiving over 100,000 likes. Online reactions ranged from amusement to concern. One commenter joked, “This is hilarious, and I bet the mother is even more angry now,” while another highlighted the importance of teaching children emotional regulation and awareness of safety risks.
This case is part of a growing trend in China where children are getting trapped in unusual places. Just a few weeks earlier, a four-year-old boy in Shandong province got his head stuck in the arms of a human-shaped park statue during an impromptu “adventure.” Firefighters managed to guide him to safety by instructing him to adjust his body carefully.
In another incident from February, a 12-year-old boy in Haikou, Hainan province, became stuck in a metal fence while trying to take a shortcut home for dinner after school.—The Star
