A Book Should Open Doors, Not Merely Fill Shelves
Over the years, many entrepreneurs, professionals and individuals with extraordinary stories have told me, “I want to write a book.” My response is often a question: “What do you want your book to achieve after the last page has been written?”
Writing a book is an accomplishment. Publishing it is a milestone. But the greater opportunity is to turn that book into a platform that communicates your values, strengthens your credibility, expands your influence and leaves a legacy. A book should not merely occupy a place on a bookshelf. It should earn a place in the minds and hearts of readers.
I have learned this not from theory alone, but from my own journey as an author of 21 books and decades of consulting, training and speaking. The books I wrote did not replace my professional work; they gave that work a stronger voice, a wider reach and a life beyond the training room.
How My Books Helped Build My Professional Brand
My first book, Change to Win, published in 1994 by Times International and made available in bookstores and airports, helped open the door to our first consulting assignment with Summarecon Agung, a major property group in Jakarta. It was an early lesson in the power of a book: someone who had never attended my programme could encounter my thinking, recognise its relevance and begin a professional relationship.
My second book, Changing Mindsets in 1997, attracted national television coverage on TV3 and RTM channels. The visibility helped introduce my work to leading organisations, including Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission, Jabatan Akauntan Negara, Institut Jantung Negara, Maxis and Tenaga Nasional. Later, my book on Changing Your Corporate Culture supported further consulting opportunities across Asia.
In 2008, The Secret of Change was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the first motivational book written in rhymes. My subsequent bestseller, Leading Positive and Profitable Change, further reinforced my positioning in leadership and organisational transformation, complementing the training programmes and consulting assignments that have defined my career. Our work has also been recognised through a BrandLaureate International Award as the company that made the most positive and profitable impact for organizations.
These experiences taught me a powerful lesson: a book can be a silent ambassador. It introduces your ideas before you enter the room, demonstrates your expertise while you are speaking, and continues to reinforce your message long after you have left.
Preserving the Wisdom of Extraordinary Lives
My writing journey has also taken me beyond management books into memoirs and biographies. I authored Lessons of Success: The Legacy of Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow, capturing the leadership principles, values and achievements of the late founder of Public Bank. The biography was launched at Menara Public Bank, Kuala Lumpur, on 19 January 2012, and appeared on Popular Book Co.’s Top 10 Non-Fiction Bestseller list in February and March 2012. Proceeds from its sales were directed at charitable organizations.
Since then, I have helped more than ten prominent leaders tell their life stories including that of Datuk Amrullah Kamal, the former JKR Sabah director and Datuk Noni Said of the former Permanent Secretary of Ministry Culture, Youth and Sports, Sabah. Each has reminded me that a biography is not merely a record of success. It is a bridge between generations, preserving the sacrifices, convictions, decisions and hard-earned wisdom that might otherwise be lost.
Five Powerful Reasons to Write a Book
A well-conceived book can become a strategic asset for an individual, a founder or an organisation:
- Build a personal or corporate brand. Express what you stand for, what makes you different and why others can place their confidence in you.
- Preserve a founder’s legacy. Record the vision, struggles, milestones and values that shaped a life or built an enduring enterprise.
- Position, promote and market. Establish a distinctive niche, reach new audiences and create opportunities for speaking, consulting, partnerships and business growth.
- Capture intellectual and proprietary capital. Document original frameworks, methods, innovations, stories and institutional knowledge so they can be shared and developed responsibly.
- Inspire people to achieve more. Give employees, clients, families and communities real stories that encourage resilience, commitment, creativity and positive change.
Turning Your Models and Lessons into Valuable Intellectual Property
Writing a book also gives you the opportunity to expound your own model of achieving your goals or overcoming adversity. It allows you to explain the principles you believe in, the steps you have developed and the lessons you wish to share. By connecting these ideas with real experiences and practical applications, you give readers a framework they can understand and apply in their own lives.
This can be expressed from a personal or corporate perspective. An individual may distil years of struggle and achievement into an original approach to resilience or personal growth. A company may articulate its distinctive model for service excellence, innovation, leadership or organisational transformation. In both cases, a book makes accumulated wisdom explicit, helping others understand how the approach works and why it matters.
Such original frameworks, together with the writing and materials that explain them, can form a valuable body of proprietary intellectual property and know-how. Their value can extend beyond book sales into training programmes, coaching, consulting and licensing opportunities. When you organise your experience into a model that others find useful, you create an asset that can continue to teach, inspire and generate value long after the book is published.
Every Genre Can Become a Platform for Influence
Your own book need not be a memoir or biography. It can be a book about leadership, lessons of success, service excellence or overcoming adversity, organised around the principles you wish to share rather than a chronological account of a life. For example, my book Lessons of Success: The Legacy of Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow draws on the experience of the founder of Public Bank Berhad to share leadership values and lessons of achievement. An individual or a company can similarly use a book to explain the thinking, practices and principles behind its success, giving readers practical lessons they can apply.
One need not write a business book to build a meaningful brand. A collection of poems can bring hope to someone struggling with grief. Personal reflections can help readers find courage in adversity. A memoir can show that setbacks need not determine the ending of one’s story.
A children’s storybook, too, can become the beginning of something remarkable. Its author might go on to mentor young writers, lead storytelling workshops or help children develop confidence through imagination, writing and public speaking. The book is the starting point; the mission grows beyond its pages.
What matters is not simply the genre, but the purpose behind it. What change do you hope to inspire? Whom do you wish to serve? What distinctive contribution do you want people to associate with your name? When those answers are clear, authorship can become a foundation for authentic positioning.
Why Writing Alone Is Not Enough
Sadly, some excellent manuscripts reach publication only to disappear into obscurity. The author has invested months or years in writing, yet little thought has been given to the intended audience, the book’s promise, its launch or the author’s long-term positioning.
At KL Strategic Change Consulting Group (KLSCC), we approach authorship as an integrated journey. We help shape the concept, conduct interviews and research, write and edit manuscripts, coordinate design, publishing and printing, and plan launches and promotional activities. We also develop book descriptions, publicity articles and strategies for meaningful reviews, endorsements and author branding.
The questions we ask are strategic: Who needs this message? Why should they care? What is the author uniquely qualified to share? How can the book support a wider purpose—whether that is professional recognition, corporate culture, education or a family legacy? A memorable launch can create attention, but sustained credibility comes from the substance of the story and the value delivered to readers.
Let Your Book Become Your Legacy
A beautiful cover may attract attention, but it is authenticity, experience and relevance that earn trust. A book cannot manufacture expertise; it can reveal and communicate expertise that has been genuinely developed. Nor should branding overshadow the message. The strongest brand is one that grows naturally from a life of contribution.
My encouragement is simple: do not write merely to tell the world what you have achieved. Write to share what you have learned, to give others courage, and to inspire what they can become. With thoughtful positioning, your book can become your voice beyond the stage, your representative beyond the boardroom and your gift to generations you may never meet.
A book begins with words on a page. Its true success is measured by the minds it enlightens, the people it empowers, the doors it opens and the lives it helps to change.
