Over the past five years, from 2019 to the present, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested 2,332 individuals aged between 16 and 40 for various corruption-related offenses. These offenses encompass a range of illegal activities, including bribery, false claims, abuse of power, money laundering, and other related crimes, as stated by Nazli Rasyid Sulong, the director of MACC's community education division.
Nazli emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the statistics reflect a troubling trend of corruption among young people. He stressed the urgent need to address and curb this issue to prevent it from becoming normalized within society. "If this continues unchecked, in ten years' time, corruption could be perceived as a norm or an accepted part of life, making it much harder to eradicate," he warned.
In response to this alarming trend, MACC has intensified its efforts to educate the youth, particularly students, who are seen as the future leaders and hope of the nation. During the closing ceremony of the 9th Anti-Corruption Student Force (AMAR) convention at Kem Permata Resort in Alor Gajah, Melaka, Nazli highlighted the importance of these educational initiatives. He underscored the critical role of AMAR, an organization established 17 years ago, in spreading anti-corruption messages across university campuses.
AMAR has been instrumental in promoting anti-corruption awareness among students, having organized a total of 2,988 programs with the involvement of 816,734 students. Despite their demanding academic schedules, which include managing study loads, completing assignments, and preparing for exams, AMAR members have actively engaged in these educational activities. Nazli commended their dedication, acknowledging the challenges they face and praising their commitment to fulfilling their social responsibilities as citizens.
He expressed his hope that AMAR would continue its vital work and remain relevant in spreading the anti-corruption message throughout Malaysia. Nazli's remarks reflect a broader vision of a society free from corruption, driven by the active participation and integrity of its young citizens.
Through these efforts, the MACC aims to instill a strong sense of ethics and accountability in the younger generation, ultimately contributing to a more transparent and corruption-free society. The ongoing initiatives underscore the importance of early education in combating corruption and fostering a culture of integrity among the youth. — Bernama
