Youth protests in Brussels descended into violence for the second week in a row on Monday, with police using tear gas and a water cannon against demonstrators.

A dpa reporter at the scene said police intervened after protesters started damaging rubbish bins and e-scooters and throwing stones and firecrackers.

The demonstration had been called in response to police violence at rallies last week against planned cuts in the education sector.

Police also used water cannon and tear gas during those protests, while officers were seen using batons against demonstrators. The city of Brussels has announced an investigation.

The protests were triggered by sweeping austerity plans from the government of Belgium's French Community. The measures include increasing teaching hours for upper secondary school teachers and clearing the way for higher tuition fees.

Students were joined at Monday's protest by teachers and representatives of civil society organizations, the Belga news agency reported.

The vast majority of those taking part - estimated at several thousand people - demonstrated peacefully.
