Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle rejected other offers to fight for a place at the club.

Rumours continued to the last day of the transfer window of a possible 20 million move to a Championship club.

But Gayle ended up staying at Newcastle, where he will be hoping to impress the new boss Steve Bruce.

The Chronicle says Newcastle had agreed a loan plus purchase deal with West Bromwich Albion, but Gayle turned it down.

Stoke City also wished to sign the player, but Gayle was not interested in moving.

Gayle has not been involved in preseason due to injury but will be hoping to hit the ground running with Newcastle at the start of the season.
