Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has sought to allay concerns surrounding the recent Cabinet reshuffle, stressing that the appointment of Hannah Yeoh as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department overseeing the Federal Territories will not weaken the Malay agenda in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.
According to Zahid, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim carefully weighed multiple considerations before finalising the appointments of Hannah and her deputy, Datuk Lo Su Fui. He explained that all major decisions were tabled at the Cabinet level and assessed in line with existing legal and administrative frameworks to ensure the interests of all communities remained protected. He emphasised that the Madani administration does not frame governance decisions through a racial lens, but instead prioritises inclusiveness and collective national interests.
Speaking after officiating a convocation ceremony at Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia, Zahid underlined that Hannah’s previous record in government demonstrated professionalism rather than ethnic or partisan bias. Despite her affiliation with DAP, he noted that her tenure at the Youth and Sports Ministry was carried out without advancing any racial agenda, which he said reflected her ability to manage a diverse portfolio responsibly.
Zahid also pointed out that the Federal Territories hold a unique status within the federation, encompassing highly diverse populations and administrative structures. The selection of leaders for these portfolios, he said, took into account the demographic and governance realities of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan. He added that the presence of Lo Su Fui, who is aligned with the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition, further reflected the government’s intention to ensure balanced representation.
Reassurance was also given that the existing leadership structure in the Federal Territories remains unchanged. Zahid highlighted that Kuala Lumpur continues to be administered by a Malay mayor, with City Hall functioning as the main implementing authority. This, he said, provides continuity and safeguards long-standing national priorities.
The deputy prime minister further affirmed that close oversight would continue at the highest levels of government. He said the prime minister and both deputy prime ministers would remain directly involved in monitoring developments in the Federal Territories to ensure that national and constitutional agendas are upheld.
The latest Cabinet reshuffle saw Hannah reassigned from the Youth and Sports Ministry to the Federal Territories portfolio, while Lo entered the federal administration as her deputy. Zahid characterised the changes as part of a broader effort to strengthen governance without compromising foundational national principles, reiterating that unity and stability remain central to the Madani government’s approach.
