Zahid said political realities differed from one state to another, citing differences in demographics, issues, candidates and voter sentiment in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stepped up calls for an early general election, declaring that the time has come for the 16th General Election (GE16), which he described as “the will of the people”.
“GE16 is the defining moment for us to regain the mandate to lead the country.
“This is not a demand. This is not a hope. This is the will of the people,” he said in his policy speech at the 2026 Umno General Assembly today.
Zahid said Umno must also work with other parties and allies to secure victory in the next general election.
He said the political landscape had become increasingly complex, with Malay voter loyalty no longer being inherited and younger voters less attached to political nostalgia.
“Politics today is far more complex. Malay politics is no longer centred around a single platform. Voter loyalty is no longer inherited,” he said.

He said Umno’s recent experiences in Sabah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan had provided different lessons, with the latter two showing that electoral victories and political cooperation could strengthen the party’s position.
“Melaka, God willing, will be the next battleground to test just how far the ‘Blue Wave’ can truly be translated into reality,” he said.
Zahid said Umno’s “Blue Wave” agenda was not merely aimed at ensuring the party remained a component of the government, but at restoring its mandate to lead the country.
He also stressed that Umno’s political struggle remained inclusive, saying the party had historically worked to unite Malaysia’s multiracial society through the Alliance (Parti Perikatan) and Barisan Nasional.
“Yes, we fight for the Malays. We are also the ones who brought together our diverse society through the Alliance and Barisan Nasional,” he said.
He said Umno would continue to empower the Bumiputera while respecting the rights of other races and ethnic groups, as well as the distinct identities of Sabah and Sarawak.
