On a day when Trevor Noah the comedian announced his exit from the popular television series, The Daily Show UMNO unceremoniously dismissed one and suspended two of its leaders for criticising its president, Zahid Hamidi.
Noah was quated as saying "We have laughed together, we have cried together. But after seven years, I feel like it's time," (to go?) Noah said.
He said that in the US but here in Malaysia Zahid fired one and suspended two other long serving UMNO leaders who were highly critical of his leadership.
Zaharin Mohd Yasin, his most vocal critic has been sacked while a former Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has been suspended as a party member effective immediately largely due to his criticism against party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Along with Tajuddin, Alor Star division chief Mohd Yusof Ismail was also suspended for similar reasons. Both suspension is expected to last six years. For these three, laughter ended and the howling has begun.
Noah, as a comedian had roasted US presidents and politicians on his daily show and even the media at the White House Correspondents Association dinner last April could get away with it because of who he is.
But for Zahrin Tajuddin and Alor Setar Chief Mohd Yusof critising president Zahid is an offence and risk dismissal or suspension. Zahid is not taking criticisms against him lightly these days and now that he has a stranglehold on the party he wants to make sure he does not lose his grip.
After they have laughed together for many years in UMNO it's time to go. For Zaharin it is forever and is now searching for another party to lean on. Fot Tajuddin who openly criticised Zahid six years of suspension is good as forever. The same applies for Mohd Yusof of Alor Setar. For these three they will be out in the political wilderness for years to come. For Trevor Noah who said "I realized there's another part of my life that I want to ... carry on exploring," this could be a new beginning. - NPR
He said he wants to learn other languages, miss going to other countries and putting on shows and "miss just being everywhere, doing everything." - NPR
We'll miss Trevor Noah for making us laugh a lot.
However, for the three in UMNO it's Zahid who has the last laugh and if he wanted more laughter he could dismiss Ismail Sabri too who is only his Vice President if the latter refused to comply with his wishes.
