Barisan Nasional (BN) will remain a committed and dependable partner in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Unity Government until the end of the current parliamentary term, according to its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who rejected claims that the coalition is working to destabilise the administration.
Speaking in Butterworth, Zahid said BN has consistently stood by the Unity Government since its formation, playing a constructive role in supporting national governance rather than exerting pressure or engaging in political manoeuvring. He stressed that maintaining stability remains a priority for BN, particularly in a complex coalition government made up of multiple parties with differing backgrounds.
Zahid explained that engagement with other political actors should not be misconstrued as an attempt to weaken the government, adding that dialogue and openness are part of democratic practice and do not signal disloyalty. He emphasised that BN has neither issued ultimatums nor shown signs of wavering support, describing loyalty as a defining principle of the coalition’s political culture.
As both Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president, Zahid said loyalty is tested not only during periods of power but also during times of political difficulty. He noted that leaders may change over time, but loyalty within a political organisation must remain constant if trust and unity are to be preserved. According to him, leadership without loyalty cannot expect commitment from its grassroots.
He also acknowledged the continued support shown by BN’s component and allied parties, saying their willingness to stand firm despite political challenges reflects the coalition’s resilience. Zahid added that such loyalty has enabled BN to remain relevant and effective even after experiencing setbacks in recent years.
Turning to governance and policy delivery, Zahid said BN is focused on ensuring that promises made by parties within the Unity Government are translated into tangible outcomes for the public. He said credibility depends on fulfilling commitments made to voters, regardless of which coalition partner originally proposed them.
To that end, Zahid announced that a retreat involving ministers, deputy ministers and party leaders from within the Unity Government will be held on January 10 and 11. The session is intended to review the progress of manifesto pledges made by BN, Pakatan Harapan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and other coalition partners over the first three years of the government.
He said the retreat will also identify overlapping priorities among the various manifestos, particularly in addressing key national concerns such as the rising cost of living, employment opportunities, education quality and public security. Unfulfilled commitments will also be examined to ensure corrective measures can be taken.
