In a surprising turn of events, Pejuang Information Chief and lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali has called for Umno President and Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take the stand as a defense witness in former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ongoing 1MDB trial. Rafique argues that Zahid’s testimony could shed light on one of the case's pivotal questions: the source of the alleged "Arab donation" that flowed into Najib's personal accounts. Given Zahid’s previous claims of meeting the supposed donor's representatives, Rafique contends that his insights could prove invaluable to Najib's defense.

The 1MDB scandal, which revolves around the alleged misuse of billions from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, has gripped the nation and drawn intense international scrutiny. Najib faces a litany of charges ie. 4 counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering that are related to funds that flowed into his accounts between 2011 and 2014. After the High Court recently ruled that Najib must present his defense, Rafique’s call for Zahid to testify has added a new twist, suggesting that Zahid’s position could influence key aspects of Najib’s trial.

Rafique emphasizes that Zahid’s role in this saga is far from minor. As Najib's Deputy Prime Minister in 2015, Zahid publicly defended Najib, claiming to have met representatives of the Arab donor who purportedly contributed funds as a goodwill gesture to support Malaysia as a "Muslim-friendly" nation. Rafique suggests that Zahid could provide essential confirmation regarding the identity of the donor and the circumstances surrounding the donation, potentially supporting Najib’s defense against allegations of misappropriation and corruption.

Given his senior government role and insider knowledge, Zahid’s testimony could bolster Najib's defense strategy. Rafique believes that now is the perfect time for Zahid to follow through on his earlier assurances to stand by Najib. “There’s no reason for Zahid to hold back in defending ‘Bossku,’” Rafique stated, referring to Najib by the popular moniker used by his supporters.

Zahid’s position could also enable him to facilitate the presence of other key witnesses from the alleged donor's family, bringing further legitimacy to Najib's claims of a legitimate donation. If Zahid were to assist in coordinating these witnesses, it could lend substantial weight to Najib’s version of events.

However, Zahid’s involvement could be controversial and potentially risky for his own political standing. Aligning so closely with Najib in this high-stakes trial could affect Zahid’s current role and future in Malaysian politics. The outcome could either affirm Zahid's loyalty to Najib or highlight the deep political risks of defending a former leader facing extensive charges. Whether Zahid steps forward or remains on the sidelines, his decision will likely have lasting impacts on Malaysia’s political landscape.

Najib’s lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, has already indicated that at least 11 witnesses will be called to aid in Najib's defense. Should Zahid accept the role, his testimony could not only influence the outcome of this monumental case but also leave a lasting mark on how power, loyalty, and justice intersect in Malaysia.
