In his recent appeal to UMNO members, Zahid Hamidi's attempt to rally grassroots support unveils a palpable sense of loneliness. The plea not to be left alone in the party’s struggle echoes the aftermath of the last general election, where supporters deserted the party due to his controversial partnership with UMNO's nemesis, DAP.
Zahid's call for intelligent social media use appears as a desperate plea for a united front. The urgency in his voice, urging members not to exacerbate criticism by forwarding it without reply, exposes a leader grasping at straws. The statement "Do not make things worse by sharing and making them viral" carries an air of vulnerability, highlighting the uphill battle he faces in rebuilding trust.
Expressing a desire for UMNO's dominance and strength, Zahid's words reveal a leader grappling with the consequences of past decisions. The need to resolve internal problems and attract non-partisan support underscores the extent of the party's challenges.
His advice to use social media as a weapon against opponents, coupled with the call to abandon constant niceties, showcases a leader willing to adopt a more aggressive stance.
However, in doing so, Zahid risks alienating potential allies and widening the internal divides he seeks to mend.
The tour's completion with a gathering of grassroots leaders signifies an attempt to consolidate support. Yet, the mere presence of over 300 members may be seen as insufficient to dispel the aura of loneliness surrounding Zahid's appeal.
As UMNO's president, Zahid's quest to restore the party's strength emphasises the importance of unity.
However, the lingering aftermath of past decisions and the stark plea not to be left alone in the struggle paint a picture of a leader grappling with the consequences of a divisive political path.
As a footnote: Trump's slogan was MAGA or Make America Great Again. But for Zahid it is MUGA: Make Umno Great Again!
