The recent floods in Johor have resulted in over 9,000 people being displaced and seeking refuge in temporary relief centers. The water levels of 14 rivers across Selangor, Johor, and Pahang have breached the dangerous mark due to continuous rain since Monday night. The situation has raised questions about the government's preparedness for natural disasters and ability to coordinate relief efforts.

Despite warnings from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the government failed to take adequate measures to prepare for the disaster, leading to a slow and inadequate response. It is disappointing that a country with a history of flooding has not developed a comprehensive plan to handle these recurring disasters. The lack of preparedness has left many wondering why there was no backup plan.

The PH-BN coalition government's response to the disaster has been criticized as insufficient and inadequate. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, currently facing 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, graft, and money laundering, has promised to take immediate action to alleviate the situation. However, concerns have been raised about the timing and sincerity of these actions.

Zahid has promised to build a Bailey bridge immediately on the main road heading to Felda Selancar, which was damaged due to overflowing water, affecting thousands of residents. While the move is admirable, it is essential to question the timing of his actions.

Some people see Zahid's response as a political stunt designed to divert attention away from the government's shortcomings. Others argue that his reaction is too little, too late. Given the criminal charges he faces, it is troubling that a person in such a position is serving in the government and making critical decisions for the people.

The PH-BN government needs to prioritize appointing dedicated and competent personnel who can effectively handle situations like natural disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of the people. The people deserve a capable leader who prioritizes their needs and works toward their welfare instead of just putting on a show to gain political mileage.

As the flood worsens, the government must act swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected. This includes providing adequate financial assistance, developing emergency response plans, and ensuring the timely construction of necessary infrastructure such as bridges and roads.

The amount provided by the Johor state government and NADMA has been criticized as insufficient. Many flood-affected families have lost their homes and possessions, and the financial assistance provided is unlikely to cover the costs of reconstruction and recovery. The government must provide adequate financial aid to those affected to help them get back on their feet.

Ultimately, natural disasters such as the recent flooding in Johor highlight the critical importance of having a competent and effective government that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens. The government must prioritize appointing dedicated and knowledgeable personnel to deal with natural disasters, develop emergency response plans, and provide adequate financial assistance to those affected. Only then can the people have faith that their government is looking out for them and prioritizing their needs in times of crisis.
