Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has indicated that he is prepared to accept whatever political direction the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) ultimately chooses, including the possibility of exiting the coalition. His remarks were delivered calmly, signaling that BN will not stand in the way should MIC decide to part ways after more than seven decades of partnership.
Speaking after officiating the 2025 Global Chinese Economic and Technological Summit at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Zahid stressed that he intends to respect MIC’s internal decision-making process. He explained that he has been following the debates that unfolded during MIC’s recent general assembly and sees no reason to interfere in what he views as a party’s sovereign right to decide its future.
Zahid, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO President, stated that the coalition would accept MIC’s decision with openness and composure. He reiterated that BN leadership has no intention of influencing or contesting the views expressed by MIC delegates, who last Sunday unanimously passed a motion giving the party the mandate to withdraw from BN whenever its leadership deems appropriate.
During the 79th MIC General Assembly held in Shah Alam, delegates empowered the party’s Central Committee to determine the timing and strategy for a potential departure, including the possibility of forming a new political coalition. MIC President Tan Sri Vigneswaran clarified on the same day that the party is carefully studying the motion and evaluating its next steps. He also offered reassurance that, regardless of the political path taken, MIC intends to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration until the end of its term.
Zahid’s remarks were made in the presence of MCA President Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong and China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing, underscoring the significance of the summit and the regional economic engagements taking place.
Adding to the conversation, BN Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan revealed that the coalition plans to hold further discussions with MIC’s top leadership after the upcoming 17th Sabah state election. He expressed hope that ongoing dialogue would help address any uncertainties or misunderstandings about MIC’s role and future within the coalition.
With MIC’s internal review underway and BN signaling openness to any outcome, the political landscape within the coalition appears poised for significant recalibration in the weeks ahead.
