Umno must break away from its traditional comfort zone and embrace drastic, unconventional reforms if it hopes to remain politically relevant, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on February 1, 2026. He cautioned that without decisive changes, the party risks continued decline and eventual irrelevance in Malaysia’s political landscape.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur at the first anniversary dinner of the Umno political school, Zahid stressed that the party can no longer rely on past achievements or historical loyalty. Instead, he said Umno needs fresh ideas, renewed direction, and a willingness to reinvent itself to appeal to modern voters. According to him, the party should not be perceived as being trapped in nostalgia, but as a forward-looking organisation capable of responding to contemporary political realities.

Zahid highlighted that rebranding must be a central pillar of Umno’s revival strategy. This, he explained, goes beyond cosmetic changes and requires the adoption of structured political marketing approaches. He added that such efforts should involve not only Umno but also its allies within Barisan Nasional, as coalition-wide coherence is essential to rebuild public confidence.

With the next general election expected in roughly 22 months, Zahid urged party members to think strategically about both the immediate future and the long-term survival of the party. He emphasised the need for strong policies, a clear brand identity, and effective messaging to ensure that Umno’s initiatives resonate with voters. Without these elements working together, he warned, even well-crafted policies would fail to gain traction.

The Umno president also pointed to the damaging impact of negative public perceptions that have followed the party in recent years. He said these narratives have driven voters away and weakened Umno’s electoral standing. Addressing this issue, he argued, must be a collective effort, as perception can undermine progress regardless of the party’s actual performance or intentions. Overcoming this challenge, he noted, is critical if Umno and Barisan Nasional are to regain trust and credibility.

Zahid further warned that if voters repeat the same choices made during the 2018 and 2022 general elections—periods he described as marking Umno’s downturn—the party could face an existential crisis. He suggested that without extraordinary corrective measures, Umno may struggle to remain viable even as it approaches its centenary in two decades.

He also underscored the importance of the Umno political school, describing its graduates as the party’s future leadership and intellectual backbone. These young members, he said, are expected to contribute ideas, analyse political developments, and support the top leadership in shaping strategies that can steer Umno toward renewal and long-term survival.
