KUALA LUMPUR — Lembaga Zakat Selangor (Zakat Selangor) recorded a total distribution of RM1.33 billion last year, with more than 60 per cent directed to the "fakir" (extremely poor) and "miskin" (needy) categories, reaching over 75,000 families across the state.
In a statement today, Zakat Selangor said this achievement was backed by zakat collections amounting to RM1.31 billion, enabling continuous aid through a range of structured intervention programmes.
The institution also identified more than 14,000 new families as "asnaf" (eligible recipients), following enhancements in assessment processes and expanded outreach to previously unregistered households.
“The determination of asnaf status is based on the calculation of had kifayah, or the minimum sufficiency line, which considers essential household needs such as food, shelter, education, healthcare, and the current cost of living,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, over 2,800 families successfully exited the poverty cycle through ongoing intervention programmes, demonstrating the effectiveness of a distribution approach that goes beyond charity to emphasise long-term empowerment.
“Petaling district recorded the highest number of fakir and miskin families, with nearly 13,600 households, followed by Klang with more than 12,600 families and Hulu Langat with approximately 11,700 families, reflecting the concentration of poverty challenges in densely populated areas.
“Such conditions highlight urban socio-economic challenges that require more targeted and comprehensive interventions, in line with Zakat Selangor’s continuous efforts to strengthen support for those in need,” the statement added.
Zakat Selangor said it will continue to reinforce basic aid distribution while expanding development initiatives such as skills training and income enhancement programmes, helping asnaf achieve sustainable escape from poverty.
The institution also reaffirmed its commitment to managing zakat collection and distribution with transparency and integrity, in accordance with Islamic law, while supporting the state government’s efforts to advance asnaf development. — May 5, 2026
