Kota Kinabalu: The legal team representing Zara Qairina’s mother said she wanted all Justice For Zara solidarity rallies to be temporarily suspended while the coroner’s inquest is ongoing.
A Warisan lawyer had on Tik Tok called for a rally for the eve of the Malaysia Day celebration on September 15.
In a statement, Saturday, the legal team comprising Rizwandean M Borhan, Shahlan Jufri, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Mohd Salleh, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Farrah Nasser and Elhanan James expressed satisfaction with the progress of the inquest, which has heard from six witnesses so far.
They thanked the public for their support through peaceful “Justice For Zara” rallies and donations to cover expert witness costs.
However, they raised concerns about recent arrests and charges related to speeches at rallies and social media comments connected to the Justice For Zara movement.
They said they do not want Zara’s name or the cause to be tarnished by irresponsible parties.
They believe all peaceful rallies should be postponed until the inquest concludes, in line with Zara’s mother’s wishes.
They urged the public to exercise caution when commenting on social media about the proceedings and evidence, citing concerns about potential contempt of court risks that could disrupt the inquest process.
They pointed out that solidarity gatherings can resume after the inquest is fully completed, but stressed the importance of allowing the court to function without interference during this critical period.
They appealed for patience and trust in the judicial process, stating that with time and proper proceedings, truth and justice will prevail.
“Let us give space to the court to carry out its duties. With patience and confidence in the judicial process, the truth will emerge and justice will be achieved,” they said.
