KUALA LUMPUR — Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic socialist, has made history by winning New York City’s mayoral race.

He becomes the youngest mayor since 1892, the first Muslim to hold the position, and the first mayor born in Africa.

Mamdani’s victory is a remarkable achievement, considering he entered the race with minimal recognition and resources, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Silwa.

The Democratic candidate made victory speech by thanking his supporters. “The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” he said, wishing his rival Andrew Cuomo, “the best in private life”.

“But let tonight be the last time I utter his name, as we abandon a politics that abandoned the many, and answers only to the few,” he said.

“Tonight, you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford.”

“On January 1, I will be sworn in as mayor of New York City,” he added.

Mamdani's win reflects the changing dynamics within the Democratic Party, where progressive, younger voices are gaining ground. His bold policies—such as free childcare and expanded public transportation—appeal to working-class voters, while his criticism of corporate elites sets him apart from the establishment. However, his critics, particularly Republicans, have labelled him the face of the far-left, warning that his socialist views could harm the city and the country.

Mamdani’s triumph is not just personal but also symbolic, as he defeated the entrenched Democratic establishment represented by Cuomo. His success resonates with those who view the old guard as out of touch with the changing political landscape. Now, with heightened media attention, Mamdani's mayoralty will be closely scrutinised, and he will face the same challenges that plagued his predecessor, Bill de Blasio, whose term ended with mixed results.

Mamdani’s progressive policies will face significant opposition. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has already voiced opposition to raising taxes to fund Mamdani’s ambitious agenda, and he will need to navigate relationships with the city’s corporate interests.

Additionally, his stance on Israel and the Gaza conflict has sparked controversy, particularly his pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal if he visits New York.

Despite these challenges, Mamdani has a unique opportunity to shape his leadership free from the baggage of past political failures. A recent CBS poll showed that nearly half of Americans were unfamiliar with the mayoral race, presenting Mamdani with a chance to define his leadership to a wider audience.

Mamdani’s victory is significant for the Democratic Party, signalling a shift towards progressive policies. However, the divide within the party between its moderate and left-wing factions will continue to play out. While Republicans will continue to frame Mamdani as a socialist threat, his success could inspire similar movements across the country. - November 5, 2025
